Did Trump release names of politicians who hid public funds in US banks?

VERDICT:  False

CLAIM: A WhatsApp message alleging that the President of the United States Donald Trump, has released a list of names of Nigerian politicians who hid public funds in US banks, has been trending since September 14th 2019. The list containing names of 25 Nigerians, US banks and the amount alleged to have been hidden in the accounts, was widely shared on WhatsApp groups. It contains names of the President Buhari’s family and his cabinet members.

FACT: CDD findings show no notable reports from credible news platforms regarding this claim. Moreover, the post did not state which platform, date or the occasion the US President made the release.

CDD fact checkers established that a similar list was shared a year ago by Onuigbo Felicia on Gistmania blog with only a different caption with 7,442 views. In the same vein, much earlier on March 23 2017, a ‎facebook user with the name Usman Kabir Muhammad shared a similar post on VOA Hausa’s facebook timeline with 27 names, mostly people seen as an ‎opposition to the incumbent President including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, current River State Governor Nyesom Wike whose name was badly misspelled by the false news peddler Nelson Weki. A similar list with almost the same names, banks and amounts was also posted on a popular forum known for sharing fake news Nairaland on September 21st, 2017.

It is therefore a fact that the list did not recently originate from the American Government as claimed by the post. It has been recycled by various sources to fit into their narrative since March 2017.

Conclusion

There is no official word in the press to corroborate this claim. Moreover, most of the names on the list are not politicians or have any official known links to politics as claimed. As such, this post is likely to be false.
