Claim: An image of the Nigerian Army logo has been spreading on WhatsApp with the claim that it has been modified, claiming it is a symbol of Jihadists.
The army logo is made up of an eagle, an interlaced six-pointed star and an Arabic script. The eagle represents graceful power. The double interlaced star is a symbol of Nigerian unity in reference to the merging of the northern and southern protectorates. And a transliteration of the Arabic script reads, “Victory comes from God alone”.
The reason for the use of Arabic, ratified by Lord Lugard in his report on the Amalgamation of Nigeria, is that Arabic was the only language in the region with a recognised script.
