Is General Adeosun the New Chief of Army Staff?

Verdict: FALSE

The Claim: On July 9, 2019, Blueprint newspaper published on its online platform with the caption “Adeosun replaces Buratai as new Chief of Army Staff”. The newspaper claimed it has credible evidence that General Buratai., the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has been replaced. This was also published by The Observers Times, an online blog, claiming it has gathered that Maj. Gen. Lamidi Adeosun has been appointed the new Chief of Army Staff by President Mohammadu Buhari. This claim as of July 10, 2019, has generated 35,193 views and 22 comments.

The Facts:  Contrary to the claim by Blueprint Newspaper and the online blog, CDD Fact Checkers conducted Advanced Search on the subject matter and no other media organization had reported the replacement of COAS. Fact checkers at CDD contacted the Nigerian Army to confirm if Maj. Gen. Adeosun, the chief of Training and Operations has replaced, COAS, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai. The response reads: “It’s not true. He was granted special promotion to the next rank by the President and Commander in chief alongside two other officers.”

In addition, the Nigerian Army on July 9, 2019 posted a series of Twitter messages on its verified twitter handle, @HQNigerianArmy. Part of the Twitter messages read: The present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has continued to demonstrate total and unflinching support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria in the bid to effectively contain the security situation in the country especially activities of terrorists in the North East. Similarly, the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, on behalf of officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army felicitate with the newly promoted officers and extends his best wishes to them in all their future endeavours. The officers are granted promotion for their extra-ordinary feats, courage, examplary leadership, loyalty, uncommon commitment and valour in the counter insurgency operation in the North Eastern part of the country.

Conclusion

The claim by Blueprint Newspaper and The Observer Times, the online blog is completely FALSE, President Mohammedu Buhari has not named General Adeosun as COAS. General Buratai remained the Army Chief.
