On Tuesday, April 20, 2021, fact-checkers at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) spotted a story published by several online newspapers. The story indicated that Kano Hisbah Board had arrested eight people for not fasting during the 2021 Ramadan. The online platforms that reported the story included Vanguard, Sahara Reporters, Daily Post, Nairaland, Naijaloaded, Stelladimokokorkus among others.

An investigation conducted by CDD shows that the report that eight people were arrested by the Kano State Hisbah Board is true.

Commander General of Kano Hisbah, Sheikh Muhammad Harun Ibnsina also confirmed the arrest. He said that those arrested found eating during the Ramadan period without any form of medical excuse.

He said: “The people arrested were all adult, sane and had no medical excuse to be eating during the day in Ramadan”

“They wouldn’t have been arrested if they are insane, or not well, or had any genuine concerns acceptable in Islam.”

“What many people don’t understand is that those we arrested are Muslims, we will not arrest Christians for not fasting or Muslims who have not attained the age of puberty, but adult Muslims without any excuse”
