FACT-CHECK: Disregard Social Media Posts Announcing Results of Edo Governorship Election not From INEC

VERDICT: Misleading Posts

CLAIM: A Facebook post that has been shared hundreds of times, reads, ‘’BREAKING News!!! Gov Obaseki in Early lead as results are being collated across the polling units in the 3 Senatorial zones in Edo State.’’

The post already has more than 600 likes, 232 comments and 81 shares at the time of writing this report.

FACT:

CDD wants to remind citizens that only the electoral umpire INEC, has the power to announce results of elections, any other result outside that, is unconfirmed and therefore misleading.

Also, at the time Hope for Nigeria made the post, about 4:00 PM, it was too early to tell who was leading in the election as most polling units were just beginning counting of votes.

They also did not provide any evidence to back their claim.

CONCLUSION
Misleading.

CDD West Africa is urging members of the public to disregard elections results that are not from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
