Claim: CDD Factcheckers came across a screenshot of a statement posted on twitter alleged to be that of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, from his known verified twitter account, @realDonaldTrump. The statement reads: “We have reports of Nigeria Supporting Iran ACTIVELY and PASSIVELY….just got of the phone with secretary Pompeo….the USA MUST and WILL respond to terrorist nations IMMEDIATELY!”. From the time stamp on the screenshot, the tweet is said to have been made at 12:11am on 8th of January 2020.

Fact: President Trump is known for using twitter to pass on important information including those related to his administration’s decision on policies and activities. Our Fact checkers therefore set out to verify the authenticity of the screenshot.

A detailed check on the timeline of the president’s official twitter handle, @realDonaldTrump, shows that no such tweet was made at 12.11am by the US President.

Our investigation reveals that it is a screenshot of a fake tweet created using an online application, intent of which is for humour (prank the public).

The screenshot showing President Trump made a tweet threatening Nigeria and others for allegedly supporting Iran in the ongoing confrontation between the two countries is False. It is a Fake tweet and should be disregarded by members of the public.
