Sylvester Okere is the Democratic National Committee’s Liaison to the African Diaspora and the Congressional Black Caucus. He is a Visiting Scholar at George Mason University and President/CEO of the African Entrepreneurs Coalition and United People for African Congress. He assisted President Obama with the Young African Leaders Initiative and served as a Maryland superdelegate in 2016.
Claire Metelits is Professorial Lecturer in the School of International Service. She is the author of Security in Africa: A Critical Approach to Western Indicators of Threat (2016), Democratic Contestation on the Margins (2015), and Inside Insurgency (2010). She previously worked as an advisor to the U.S. Army and the military’s Africa Command.
Mike Phelan is the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Senior Advisor for Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Sub-Sahara Africa. He directs oversight of U.S. foreign policy and foreign assistance. As a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy, he served as a pilot and Foreign Area Officer.
The moderator, Carl LeVan, is Associate Professor in the School of International Service and the author of Dictators and Democracy in African Development: the Political Economy of Good Governance in Nigeria.
