Nigeria’s return to the polls for the governorship, house of assembly and the FCT area council elections on March 9th, 2019. The elections will hold in 29 states and the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja). The Presidential polls were earlier conducted on February 23rd with the incumbent President Muhammad Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) winning reelection with 55.6 per cent of the total votes cast to claim a victory over major opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The elections represent the sixth electoral circle since the return to democracy and are coinciding with twenty years of democracy in the country. The fourth republic has been the longest uninterrupted period of democratic governance in Nigeria since independence in 1960.
